We
all know it's important to have a good diet, and to excercise
in order to
stay healthy. Eating the right food,
taking supplements,
or joining
a gym can be expensive. But there are lots of ways you
can look after yourself and your
wallet too!
Remember
the best person to take care of you...is YOU.
1
Drink plenty of plain water. Research suggests
around two litres
a day is ideal. You don't have to
buy lots of mineral water. Use an
empty
bottle, fill it with water,
carry it around, and keep sipping!
2
Try
and eat three or four pieces of fruit, and at least two servings
of
vegetables
a day. Choose those that are in season, they're cheaper!
3
One
great item to add to your shopping basket is yoghurt. Choose
the kind that
has live cultures. A recent medical report showed that
it helps reduce
the risk from common infections like colds.
4
You
don't have to go to a gym to get fit, though if you intend doing
simple excercises at
home (sit ups, push ups etc) consult with an expert
trainer
at least once to make
sure you're doing it right. This will save
wasted
effort, and avoid injury.
5
Start by walking more, but before starting
more strenuous excercise
(fast running, or cycling are both
cheap once you've bought good
trainers
or a bike) check with your GP.
6
Excercise should be fun, otherwise you won't
do it. So why not do
something
you enjoy that just happens to provide
excercise too. Go join
a
Salsa or Line
Dancing
class!
7
On the subject of fun and
social activites, recent research has proved
that laughing makes you healthy, and also
suggests that spending
time with friends
also improves your health. The study in Pittsburgh showed
people who socialised more got less colds. So hang out with fun
people!
8
You need to make time for friends and family,
but also make sure you
have time for yourself. However busy
your day, try and find at least five
minutes,
preferably thirty minutes
to just relax.
9
No matter how much you have to cram into your
day, and how
many other people you have to think
of, every day try and do at least
one thing just for YOU.
10
Ever thought about meditating? Sounds too
difficult? Or too 'Hippy'? All
you
have to do is think about one thing
so your mind cuts out everything
else. Try
to focus on a flame, some music or your breathing. Don't
be
surprised if you can't even mange
thirty seconds to begin with. It will
come
and do wonders for your body and
mind.
11
Get plenty of sleep. How much does your body
need? Anything from four
to ten hours a day, whatever works
for you. You'll know if you're not getting
enough. If you're not, no excuses. Get more kip!
12
The most important thing about sleep is that
you should sleep through
whatever hours you need, and feel energised when you wake up.
Do you
have
to get up at the same time everyday?
And are you always in deep sleep
when
the alarm goes
off? Well sleeping goes in
cycles, so try going to bed
20
minutes
earlier, or even 20 minutes later
so you're nearly awake when you
hear
that
BRRRRNNG!
